LAVAL, QC , Saturday, October 7, 2006 -- Coming off a disappointing loss to Alberta, the East Yorks Komets needed a tie against Newfoundland and Labrador to advance to the Bronze Medal game.

Play was chippy from the start and twenty minutes in, an overly aggressive tackle earned an East York player a red card.

Newfoundland and Labrador pressed their advantage but were denied at least two goals by the fine play of East York’s keeper and a trio of defenders. In the first instance, Robert Meinert managed to push the ball over the bar at the last second, in the second, two of East York’s defenders dove in front of the ball that had beaten their keeper and managed to prevent a goal.

Peter Bechtel brought his team’s supporters to their feet when his shot careened off one post, traveled along the goal line and deflected off the other post into the hands of the Newfoundland and Labrador keeper.

East York had several other counter-attacks turned aside and the half ended 0-0.

In the second half, East York continued their patient, attacking style and for long periods of time it was hard to believe that East York was a man down.

At the 35-minute mark, Michael Brathwaite, running parallel to the top of the eighteen-yard box, sent a shot over the keeper’s head and into the far corner of the net.

A minute later, Jordan Webb’s team mates got him the ball at the corner of the eighteen yard box from where he eluded two defenders and the keeper before scoring East York’s second goal.

Four minutes elapsed before Ontario had their third goal -- a penalty shot taken by David Leo.

East York lost their bid for a shut-out about a minute into extra-time and settled for a 3-1 win.

Ontario’s next game was against British Columbia for the Bronze Medal game. Both teams finished with three and one records in their group. East York lost to the team from British Columbia, the Burnaby Royals, 3-2 and came in 4th place.
